I. | J: | In a mass movement, there’s this concept called ‘de-individuation,’ meaning you lose your personal identity and belong to the crowd, naturally following the group’s commands. And who gives those commands? Probably whoever shouts the loudest. At that moment, for example, if someone yells, ‘Everybody throw stones!’—just like in Leeds last night—then everyone starts throwing stones. Or if they shout, ‘Retreat!’ you follow them. There’s someone behind you directing your movements. That’s de-individuation. No matter what you’re like in normal life, once you’re part of that crowd, you’re involved in the collective. It’s not hard to understand. You get there, you hear someone commanding—often a young person, who might push it to extremes—and you just go along with it. |
