The National Security Law, officially known as the “Law of the People’s Republic of China on Safeguarding National Security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region,” was passed by the Standing Committee of the 13th National People’s Congress on June 30, 2020, and came into effect in Hong Kong on the same day, without offical local legislation in Hong Kong.

國安法，全名係《中華人民共和國香港特別行政區維護國家安全法》，喺2020年6月30號由第十三屆全國人民代表大會常務委員會通過，並喺同日正式喺香港實施，當中並無經過香港本地正式立法程序。

The 7th Hong Kong Legislative Council election was originally scheduled for September 6, 2020. On July 11 and 12, the pro-democracy camp held a “35+ primary election” aimed at coordinating candidates for the upcoming Legislative Council election. Over 600,000 people voted in the primary. However, the Hong Kong government, citing the pandemic, decided to postpone the election by one year. On January 6, 2021, the National Security Department of the police carried out a large-scale arrest of 53 individuals who either participated in or helped organize the primary, charging them with “subversion” under the new National Security Law.

香港第7屆立法會選舉原定喺2020年9月6號舉行。泛民主派喺7月11號同12號舉行「35+初選」，希望協調參選人應對即將舉行嘅立法會選舉。最終有超過60萬人投票。不過，香港政府以疫情為理由，將選舉押後一年。 2021年1月6號，警方國安處進行大規模拘捕，53名參與或協助籌辦初選嘅人士被控以觸犯《國安法》嘅「顛覆國家政權罪」。
