2019 - Hong Kong

The Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill Movement began on March 15, 2019, opposing a bill that would allow extraditions from Hong Kong to Mainland China. Emphasizing spontaneous, fluid, and flash-mob-style protests, the motto of the movemenet was “Be Water”, a strategy to avoid police confrontation. Protesters used tactics such as marches, demonstrations, sit-ins, singing and strikes, and blocked major roads of the city. On June 21, protesters occupied Harcourt Road and surrounded the police headquarters by noon.

The movement demanded the following from the government:

1) Withdrawal of the bill

2) Removal of the “riot” label

3) Amnesty for protesters

4) Investigation of police misconduct

5) Chief Executive Carrie Lam’s resignation.

Lasting over a year with over 2 million participants (almost 1/4 of the city’s population), the movement slowed in late 2020 due to pandemic-related restrictions.
