Harcourt Road :   Collecting and Showcasing parallel histories of Community Organising in two streets of the same name In Sheffield and Hong Kong

2015 - Hong Kong

After the “Umbrella Movement,” more grassroots, community-driven street and neighborhood activities emerged. The goal was to connect communities and sustain daily life while incorporating ideas of civic autonomy and organization, with the hope of maintaining a state of civic awakening, similar to wild grass with its resilience and adaptability. The “Umbrella Festival,” organized by the Master of Arts in Cultural Studies program at the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, was one of the more large-scale and systematic academic, artistic, and cross-media events following the Umbrella Movement. It aimed to respond to the 2014 movement, with participating artists hoping to encourage the public to express their views and responses to the Umbrella Movement through visual art, dance, performance art, video, independent films, theatre, and a series of workshops and seminars. The festival took place from May 17 to 31, 2015, at the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre(JCCAC).
